Hijackers strike twice within 10 minutes

Drivers must lock their doors and keep windows closed while driving and approaching stop signs or traffic lights to reduce the chance of being hijacked.

A couple were victims of an attempted hijacking in Radcliff Road, Woodlands on Thursday, 9 October at about 4.30pm.

George and his wife Dolly, who did not want their surname revealed, had gone to visit a friend who was unwell.
While George was parked outside the friend’s home in a Toyota Yaris, he was approached by three men, two of them armed with guns. Dolly was on the pavement about to get into the car. “My wife screamed loudly when she realised the men were running towards me. People started coming out of their houses,” said George.

The hijackers then stopped their car behind George’s car. “Luckily our doors were locked and our windows closed,” said George.
The hijackers told George to get out the car but instead he drove away. “The experience was traumatic. I’m glad they didn’t fire any shots,” said George.

On the same day a family of five were hijacked in Kingfisher Avenue, Yellowwood Park at about 4.40pm.
Krishni Govender and her four passengers were driving up Kingfisher Avenue when a gold Audi drove in front of her and blocked both lanes.
Four men got out and surrounded Govender’s Toyota Fortuner and told the family to get out the car. “My daughter locked the car door but I told her to get out,” said Govender. The men pulled Govender out of the car and she fell to the ground. “My daughters screamed because they thought the men were going to drive over me. It all happened so quickly,” said Govender. The men fled the scene with the Fortuner. The vehicle was recovered 25 minutes later in Siyaya Road, D-section Umlazi by Montclair crime prevention and W/O Tiger Ramsamy of the provincial task team. “I commend the police for the effort they put in to recovering my car. I also thank my brother DL Govender, an officer at Wentworth SAP, for his help,” said Govender.

According to Montclair SAP communications officer, Lt Leopold Jojozi, it’s believed the suspects who hijacked the family were involved in the Radcliff Road hijacking. “As we are experiencing hijackings in our area, Montclair SAP management are putting a strategy in place to overcome these. Drivers must lock their doors and keep windows closed while driving and approaching stop signs or traffic lights to reduce the chance of being hijacked,” said Jojozi.
