Crime alert issued ahead of festive season

Car-related crime warning for Bluff and surrounds.

IN the run-up to the festive season, Brighton Beach SAP has noticed a marked increase in vehicle-related crimes and has issued guidelines to reduce risks.

“Vehicle theft not only impacts on the vehicle owner, but society, as it drives insurance premiums up and stolen vehicles are also used in the commission of other offences, such as hijackings, armed robberies and house robberies,” said Brighton Beach SAP communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux.

With this in mind, the station has offered the following guidelines:

* Keep record of the vehicle information number (VIN), and license number in a safe place. In the event of a car being stolen, these details will allow police to circulate information quickly.

* Do not leave logbooks or vehicle licence renewals in the car.

* Ensure the VIN is etched on windows, doors, fenders and boot, as this makes it challenging to sell stolen car parts.

* Install steering wheel, column or brake locking devices as a deterrent.

* Always lock doors and close windows.

* Face the car when using a remote lock and ensure it is locked before walking away.

* Have a vehicle tracking system installed.

* Use pre-paid card, monitored parking areas instead of less secured areas.

* Avoid parking close to exit routes.

* Park in well-lit areas at night.

* If possible avoid parking on a verge.

* Valuables should not be left in plain sight and remove GPS mounts and stereo faces.

* Never leave keys in the ignition.

* At home, store vehicle keys in a safe, hidden place.
