Lofty and lads take skins event

Honey Kitchenbrand won the meat raffle and Brian Smith (R40) and William Richardson (R20) shared the 60/40 board spoils.

LAST Wednesday was the running of Lyn Wild’s open pairs where 20 teams participated for the four prizes on offer.

First session winners with an 18-0 whitewash over their hapless opponents was the pairing of Bill Addinall and Anne Smit.

Second session went to Bruce Willox and Len Roscoe teaming up for the first time. Their score was a 2+9. Brian Smith and Dave Faifer did enough to secure second place overall with their 4+16, but the runaway victors on the day were Shaun McAlistair and Gwen Tait, who also achieved a second session whitewash with a total score of 4+37. Honey Kitchenbrand won the meat raffle and Brian Smith (R40) and William Richardson (R20) shared the 60/40 board spoils. Nobody chose the winning lotto numbers 1-2-10 so it is a carry over.

In club competitions, the men’s senior singles saw Roy Funnell beat Dennis Gericke 21-11 and Lofty Cawthorne beat Chris Klopper 21-5 and will now face Roy in a semi final. In the meantime, in the other semi of the same event, Derek Stevens, playing with sore ribs from a recent bicycle accident, had no trouble in beating Bob Hayward 21-8 to book himself a place in the final. He will face the winner of Lofty and Roy.

In the men’s drawn trips, Chris Klopper, Gordon Chislett and Russell Shepherd won by three shots (19-16) against Arnie Harper, Mike Flack and Johan Nel. The other semi was held up as Steve Van Rooyen was attending the PNB fours playoffs but he, Robbie Carr and Brian Deats are due to play Chris Klopper, Gordon Chislett and Russell Shepherd as soon as possible.

On Sunday, in the Rawson’s fours skins, the team currently on the perch – namely Dave Faifer, Aroo Mudley, Brian Hollis and Ron Gillespie – arrived incomplete and had to second other players at the last minute. This left the perch spot wide open and Lofty Cawthorne, together with Archie Fisher, Bob Hayward and Ken Koch took full advantage and won the main prize with the score of 19+17.

This effectively puts them on the perch for next month, but as Archie Fisher will not be available on that occasion, the perch will once again be wide open. It is currently worth R200 and increases by R50 per month until won. In second place was a team from Queensburgh Bowling Club playing in this event for the first time. Well done to Duncan Buckthorpe, Mark Rodgers, Shawn Sadler and Mike ‘Red’ Slogrove who each won a Spur meal voucher worth R100. Session prizes with scores of 8+7 on each occasion were Dennis Gericke, Chris Klopper, Peter Prenger and Gordon Chislett (the first) and Anthony and Robbie Carr, Tommy Simpkins and Shaun Masters, also playing in this event for the first time (the second). The sportsman’s prize with a score of 2-17 was the Queensburgh team of Mark and Larraine Vermeulen with Rodney and Pam Kitchen. Two 60/40 boards were sold out. Winners for the first draw were Aroo Mudley (R40) and Mike Freeman (R20). In the second draw, Duncan Buckthorpe won the R40 and Aroo Mudley (again) won R20. Bob Hayward was delighted to win a magnificent gammon in the meat raffle.

Last Friday, the R1,300 snowball was not won as Carl Zandberg was not present when his number was drawn. The various meat pack winners were: Mutton pack Thomas Simpkins; roast beef PJ Sparks; chicken pack Buks Swanepoel; rump steak Richard Hendicott; pork ribs Dan Paruk; chicken Honey Kitchenbrand.
