Budding poet’s words hit the mark

His winning poem will feature in the ‘Sol Plaatje European Union Poetry Anthology.’

A NEW Forest High School pupil recently came second in the Douglas Livingston poetry competition.
Lwazi Phewa started writing poetry in grade 6.

He writes his thoughts in a journal and turns those thoughts into poetry. Phewa wrote two pieces of poetry for the competition and his piece ‘Poem for my girlfriend’ scooped second prize in the competition run by Douglas Livingston, held at Westville Girls High School in the last week of September. “I was shocked and amazed that I came second,” said Lwazi.
His winning poem will feature in the ‘Sol Plaatje European Union Poetry Anthology.’

The 17-year-old looks up to admires South African poet ‘Sbu the poet’ who has featured on Ukhozi FM. “I love writing poetry, I relate to the poems I read and get my inspiration from there,” said Phewa. He says he would like to pursue a career in electrical engineering and adds that he wouldn’t mind writing in his spare time.

Besides being a writing enthusiast, Phewa is also part of the school’s Representative Council of Learners and a member of the Durban Youth Council. “I enjoy teaching people the right way to do things and raise awareness of issues that affect teenagers,” said Phewa. He is also a keen sportsman and enjoys swimming, hockey, rugby and soccer.
