YWPWI hosts talk on environment

Members were advised and shown how the environment will develop over the next few years, particularly regarding the preparations for the new dug out port and industrial regeneration.

YELLOWWOOD Park Women’s Institute (WI) president Vanessa Wilesmith welcomed all members to the meeting and asked that they think of other members who are unwell.

They missed a number of members who gave their apologies.

After the reading of the previous minutes by secretary Marsha Hart and the financial report by treasurer Wendy Henderson, everyone was looking forward to the interesting talk by speaker Thokazani Mkhize.

Mkhize works for WESSA and is on the Premier’s advisory board for the environment in KZN.

Members were advised and shown how the environment will develop over the next few years, particularly regarding the preparations for the new dug out port and industrial regeneration. The Dube Trade Port will be of great advantage to the people of KZN. Members were also advised of the extension of the existing port of Durban and at Richards Bay. Ms Mkhize assured all present that in no way would the environment be affected by all these new expansions and the protection of the environment was always at the top of her list while being part of the Premier’s board. It was a very interesting talk and most informative.

Judge Linda Melson who attended Congress on the WI’s behalf will give her report next month, but members congratulate Linda for coming first in the floral competition at Congress and to Jean Ball for entering her chutney.

The members doing tea at next month’s meeting will be Linda Melson, Anne Gaze and Linda Hewer. Members on the sales table will be Jan Kirk, Wendy Henderson and Wendy van Eyk. Birthday girls for October were Robin Murray, Wendy Henderson, Wendy van Eyk and Anne du Plessis. YWP WI will be doing Meals on Wheels on 13 October, working at Outspan on 20 October and Botanic Gardens on 25 October, so members will be kept busy, doing volunteer charity work.Members will host a group fun evening on l December and want to have a bumper sales table, so take along your items. They also need items for the Kombat Fair on 7 December. Take books magazines and white elephant items.

Merit: First Gerda Viljoen, second Marsha Hart, third Jean Ball.

YWP WI meets at Yellowwood Park Bowling Club on the last Monday of the month at 7am for 7.30pm all are very welcome to attend this fun-filled meeting.
