SDB launches health programme for elderly

The SDB ABM will host a wellness programme for the elderly of the South Durban Basin.

WITH the International Day of Older Persons celebrated on Wednesday, 1 October, the South Durban Basin (SDB) Area Based Management (ABM) office introduces a health, wellness and safety programme for elderly people.

The SDB ABM held a senior citizens empowerment event earlier in the year, where they were made aware of the overriding concerns of the elderly South Durban citizens.

“In a survey done with the senior citizens who participated in the programme, the issues of their health, wellness and safety came up as priority concerns. It is for this reason that the SDB ABM is planning outreach open-days at ward level, to ensure that testing, and crucial health and safety information is taken to the people,” said SDB ABM social development co-ordinator, Anitha Govender.

The programme will take place on the Bluff, in Wentworth, Clairwood, Merebank, Isipingo, Lamontville, Ezimbokodweni and Umbilo. Pap smears, weight measurements, blood sugar and pressure tests, eye tests, HIV tests and counselling, SASSA, heart health and safety information, self-defence training, fitness and nutrition talks and home affairs assistance will be on offer.

Businesses or individuals willing to assist in providing services for this programme should call Nompilo Myende on 031- 451-9800 or email Nompilo.Myende@durban.gov.za.
