Duiker sold illegally recovers at Crow

Crow is in need of tins of Lactogen No 1 milk formula to help feed their Spring babies.

A baby grey duiker was taken to the Centre for Rehabilitation for Wildlife (Crow) on Thursday, 18 September after she was caught by members of the public.

‘Jeannie’ was chased out of a forest and caught by locals and sold on the roadside in the Park Rynie area. “Reports regarding the sale of wildlife on South African roads seems to be spiralling out of all control of late. Help us spread the word that this is a both an illegal and highly unethical,” said marketing and communications officer, Paul Hoyte. He said because members of the public feel sorry for an animal they buy it in order to set the animal free, but this unfortunately does encourage supply and demand.
“Jeannie is doing well and will most likely be here until the late Summer months of 2015. The public should report people who sell wildlife to Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and a local SPCA who have the authority to confiscate and prosecute people,” said Hoyte.
