UPDATE: House fire survivor in critical condition

Mrs Mbhele remains in a critical condition in hospital nearly a week after her rescue from a Bluff house fire.

MRS Mbhele, the 83-year-old woman who was rescued from a house fire on the Bluff last week remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Mrs Mbhele’s family was called to the hospital yesterday when her heart rate dropped dramatically to between 40 and 50 beats per minute, according to Brighton Beach SAP communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux. “Upon their arrival yesterday afternoon they witnessed a miracle as her heart rate elevated to 111,” said Capt Le Roux.

Rumours swirled on social media yesterday that Mrs Mbhele had succumbed to her injuries, but Capt Le Roux has confirmed she is in a critical, but stable condition. “She has a 5% chance of recovery from the injuries sustained during the fire and requires surgery but doctors are concerned her weak heart will not manage the strain of an operation.”
