25 years for hostel murder, attempted murder

Fifteen years for murder and 10 years for attempted murder are not to run concurrently

Durban Magistrate’s Court sentenced Justice Kende Biyela to 15 years for murder and 10 years for attempted murder on Tuesday, 11 August.
Biyela was found stabbed and killed Siszwe Mfuno Sikhakhane (26) at the SJ Smith Hostel on 16 June 2013. Biyela also stabbed 29-year-old Njabulo Siyabonga Zulu in the back. Sikhakhane later died in hospital due to his injuries.
On Thursday, 10 October 2013 after assistance from informers and crime intelligence, Biyela was found hiding in a tin house in Gwala Street, Lamontville, where he was arrested. The magistrate ruled Biyela’s sentences of 15 years for murder and 10 years for attempted murder are not to run concurrently, meaning he will serve an affective 25 years. Biyela was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
