Claudie Allen trophy goes to WBC’s team Lofty

Dave Swanson lost out on picking up the R1400 snowball last Friday when he wasn’t present when his number was drawn.

AT Wanderers Bowling Club, in club competitions in the ongoing men’s nominated pairs, Dennis Gericke and Mike Freeman beat Graham and Glen Funnell 25-13 and Robin Grobler and Jimmy Neill beat Lofty Cawthorne and Eric Smit 26-16.

Jimmy insisted that the scribe mentions that they did this with an end to spare.

In the mixed drawn pairs, Steve Van Rooyen and Barbara Neill beat Arnie Harper and Chantal Hearnshaw 25-17 to advance to the final where they will meet Bob Hayward and Gwen Tait at a future date.

In the Claudie Allen breakfast trips on Sunday, a good turnout of 32 teams participated. First session went the way of Clive Symons with Jackie and Mike Freeman with a +16. Second session went to William Richardson and Johan Nel with a +16. In second place overall was the Stella Park side of Nick Baker with John and Jimmy Van Rensburg with a 4+17 who lost on a count out to Lofty Cawthorne, Archie Fisher and Eric Redman, who had the same score.

Ernie Lochner won the meat raffle and Louisa McGlynn and Keegan Bauristhene each won R40 on the 60/40 board draw while PJ Sparks and Paul Steele each took the minor R20 spoils. The sportsman’s prize on a 0 minus a good few went the way of Denis Hearnshaw with his wife Chantal and Reggie, in spite of the fact that they picked up an eight in the second session.

The various meat winners were: Mutton pack John Campbell, pork roast and patties Thomas Simpkins, chicken pack Chris Fourie, rump steak Troy Simpkins, pork ribs Hennie Geldenhuys, chicken Thomas Simpkins. Well done to all of you.

On Friday, 15 August, watch the Sharks take on the Pumas at 7.10pm live – with sound – on both TVs. After the game you can dance to the sounds of The Memory Stick. Those who have entered the English League soccer draw should note this will take place in the bar at 6.45pm sharp. Be sure to be there in time for the snowball draw too.

Thoughts and prayers are with Jean Edley who is battling for her life in intensive care at St Augustine’s, Dave Matthews who was admitted to hospital for treatment for an unknown ailment, Jumbo Nel who is recovering from twice breaking his leg, Bob Hayward’s wife Rosanne who has been hospitalised at St Augustine’s for three weeks with severe water retention and shortness of breath with leg infection and other ailments, and PJ Sparks who is still in hospital after major surgery and whose barfly mates are missing him.

A Wanderers badge was found on the greens after Sunday’s play. The rightful owner can collect it from Eric Redman.

Novices are to remember that from 23 August, Stella Park will be hosting a novice pairs tournament every Saturday starting at 10am. Local novices should be advised of this and encouraged to participate. For further enquiries, call Trevor Varkevisser on 082-451-6566.
