US pet hospital donation helps Crow

American pet hospital builds relationship with Crow.

THE Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow) received a $1,000 cheque from Banfield Pet Hospital in Washington, USA on Thursday, 3 July.

The cheque was proudly handed over by US-born former Crow volunteer, Marissa Lenting. The Washington State University graduate’s relationship with Crow began when she was a live-in volunteer at the centre for four months in 2012. It was then that her passion for the centre and their work was birthed.

“Volunteering for Crow is one of the best experiences of my life. I have always loved working with wildlife, it is my passion, and being able to make a difference and help the local wildlife each and every day, whether it be fixing up an enclosure, providing enriching treats, cleaning wounds or releasing an animal into its new home, is fulfilling. On top of helping the animals, the people are the warmest I have met. I could not be more thankful to know them and call them my friends,” said Marissa.

When she returned to the States, Marissa worked at Banfield Pet Hospital. She shared her passion for Crow with her colleagues and before she returned to South Africa, she tried to build a connection between Crow and the pet hospital.

“I took information about Crow to our weekly meetings and asked if anyone would like to donate. The nurses and doctors at Banfield were very interested and impressed with Crow and wanted to help. When the date was set for my return to South Africa, the staff donated their money with a focus on the medicine and clinic, as that was the most similar link between the two,” she said.

The total donated by the hospital was R13,400, as another donation came in after Marissa had left America, for her second home.

“Handing over the the cheque was great. Crow and its staff have given me so much, it was great to be able to give back. We are planning on building the relationship between Banfield and Crow by supporting monthly medical needs on a continuous basis.”

Crow thanks the staff and management of Banfied Pet Hospital for their generous contribution.
