Sewage overflows leave Bluff seething

Water and sewage problems on the Bluff are making residents irate.

ONGOING sewage overflows on the Bluff have left residents fuming and made the area infamous for bad smells.

Some residents have had enough of sewage water spewing from badly-maintained systems and destroying their homes and the environment. One such problem area is in Richardson Road. Long-time residents, Jane and Felix Hermitte said the problem has been ongoing for about 14 years. “The sewage water comes gushing out and sometimes it takes days before anyone responds and clears it up,” said Jane.

The sewer has overflowed into the road twice in the last month – on Friday, 11 July and Sunday, 3 August.

Bluff Ratepayers chairman, Ivor Aylward has been monitoring the situation on the Bluff for the last two years and said the problem persists, with little or no support from the municipality.

“Where does all this muck go to – do they ever think about that? It washes into the canals and onto our beaches. There is no fish life left in the local canals and it is unhealthy for bathers on the beach. The weirs in the canals are not properly maintained and I do not think they were properly designed as they are not functional. We have had numerous municipal officials looking into the sewage problem on the Bluff, but no answers seem forthcoming,” said Aylward.
