‘Blue light’ cops rob motorist of R20,000

'Knocker' gang preys on unsuspecting victims.

ROBBERS posing as policemen and using a blue light on their vehicle struck in Wood Road, Montclair, making off with cash and property valued at over R20,000 on Friday, 1 August.

At about 3.15pm, after withdrawing R20,000 from a bank in Montclair Mall, a man was stopped by a white VW Golf with a blue light on its roof at the Wood Road circle near the mall. Three men pretending to be police officers searched him and took R20,000 cash, a laptop and a cellphone. The men were not dressed in police uniforms.

A Montclair SAP police officer said incidents like this were frequent in the South Coast Road, Mobeni area. It is alleged the same men, who sometimes use a woman, target people as they leave the bank. One of their ploys is to walk in front of a person and just before the exit, they point to a bag of money and offer to share it. The unsuspecting victim is then lured to a vehicle and robbed of their own money. Police have nicknamed the the trio the ‘knocker’ gang.

Montclair SAP urges residents to take caution when withdrawing large amounts of money. If you have any information on the gang, contact Montclair SAP on 031-469-8200.
