Sights on the beach: A whale of a circus

The excitement was almost contagious, with some people and even children taking selfies and videos of the carcass.

THERE’s a buzz of excitement on the beach at Amanzimtoti, where a beached whale carcass is drawing people from far and wide.

The excitement was almost contagious, with some people and even children taking selfies and videos of the carcass.

People with buckets and plastic bags could be seen walking off with their share of the meat, and many others were seen racing up and down the hill to ensure they did not miss out on the spoils. Many others were seen walking along Kingsway with buckets and smiles on their faces, keen to get in on the action.

Two men were seen carrying half of the whale’s penis, saying they would sell it for thousands of rands for muti purposes. The intended use of whale meat varied from person to person, with some planning to feast on it while others were planning to cash in. Tom Ngodela said he was sending the meat to a friend in Pretoria where it would be used in muti to cure gangrene. Others said they would use it to make candles.

Even though the stench was overwhelming, it did not deter the crowd from hacking away at the beast and parents taking their children along to see the spectacle.
