Constable helps stamp out drunk driving

One Brighton Beach SAP officer has secured numerous arrests for drunk driving over the last few months.

SOUTH Durban drunk drivers have amassed more than R50,000 in fines or two years in prison through arrests by Brighton Beach SAP’s Constable I Mgcongo.

The detective services officer conducted several investigations for drunk and driving offences within the Brighton Beach policing area over the last few months, leading to stiff sentences passed at the Durban Regional Court. These include, among others, R20,000 or 10 months’ imprisonment, R17,000 or eight months’ imprisonment and R13,000 or six months’ imprisonment.

According to Brighton Beach SAP communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux, road blocks are held on a continuous basis within the Brighton Beach policing area by SAP, Metro Police and RTI. “The purpose of these operational activities is to address drunk and driving offences and reckless driving by road users whose mode of transport does not conform to the standards as set out by the Road Traffic Act,” said Cpt Le Roux.

Brighton Beach SAP management welcomes the convictions and commends Cst Mgcongo for the professional manner in which he conducted his investigations.

“We urge locals and visitors to our policing area to be responsible road users. Choose a designated driver if you have consumed alcohol – remember there is no safe limit,” said Cpt Le Roux.
