Axe killer up for wife’s murder

Mario Allers is alleged to have stabbed his wife, Carol Allers to death.

THE Bluff community was outraged at last week’s murder of former resident, Carol Allers (nee De Klerk), allegedly at the hands of her husband and convicted murderer, Mario Allers at their Randparkrif, Randburg home on Wednesday, 23 July.

Carol (49) lived on the Bluff for most of her life, and attended a Toti high school.

She befriended and became infatuated with Mario Allers after he murdered his parent, best friend and grandmother with an axe at their Winchelsea Avenue, Bluff home on 27 July, 1999. The Sun reported at the time of how, two days later, Allers, then 27, had tried to kill himself while in police custody, by slitting his throat with a sharp object.

By the time he was convicted in November 2000, he and Carol had struck up a relationship. He was sentenced to serve six years for attempted murder and 15 years for three counts of murder.

A Bluff man, who knew Carol well, told the Sun last week that the community couldn’t understand her closeness to Allers at the time. They had tried to warn her off him, owing to the heinous acts he stood accused of, but she was resolute. Her brother Paul de Klerk echoed this sentiment.

Allers served his sentence at Newcastle prison before being moved to several other prisons through Carol’s intervention. He was finally moved to Boksburg prison where she visited him twice a week. As a result of her relentless efforts to have him released, he was paroled in November 2009. A short four months later, he was back in prison after it was discovered he was back on drugs. Less than two years later, he was paroled again.

Carol and Mario married on 29 July, 2012.

Paul told the Sun that Allers was back on drugs by November 2013. He was sent to a rehab facility, where he stayed for seven weeks of the mandatory six months. For a number of months, things seemed to have calmed down. However, about four weeks ago Allers was back at it again.

It is alleged the day before he killed his wife, Allers had returned his work keys and told his boss he may as well fire him as he was going to rehab. Speculation is rife that the couple were fighting, which may have subsequently led to her death at about 2am on Wednesday morning. Carol was found stabbed three times in her back and once in the arm.

Allers was arrested in connection with Carol’s death and appeared in Roodepoort Magistrates Court on Friday, 25 July and applied for legal aid. He will re-appear in court on Thursday, 31 July in connection with the crime.

Paul said he was angered by her death. From the get-go, Paul was not fond of Allers. “I first met him in 2007 while he was at Boksburg prison. I didn’t like him. He couldn’t look me in the eye.” He described his sister as a caring and loving person.

Paul, who lived a few minutes’ drive from his sister, said he will miss her smiling face. She is survived by two brothers, a sister and mother. Her father died in 2002.

She will be buried on the date of what would have been her second wedding anniversary – Tuesday, 29 July.
