Tavern murders garner two life sentences for gunman

DJ called Bhengu for assistance during a fight with two men.

A 31-YEAR-old Umlazi man was handed down two life sentences for killing two men at a tavern by Umlazi Regional Court on Tuesday,15 July.

Thandwayinkosi Ephraim Bhengu was found guilty by the court for fatally shooting Sphiwe Mhlongo and Mlungiselwa Ncwane on 26 November, 2011. The duo were drinking at a tavern in Umlazi’s J-section when they were involved in an altercation with the DJ. Bhengu was called by the DJ to help him. He shot and killed Mhlongo and Ncwane.

A case of murder was opened at Bhekithemba police station. After almost a year on the run, Bhengu was arrested on 7 August, 2012.

Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Betty Ngobeni complimented Bhekithemba detectives for their good work.
