He is believed to have been constructing a retaining wall on a residential property when his leg got trapped under suspected debris.
The rescue was made difficult mainly by water refilling the trench as rapidly as it was being drained.
ER24 paramedics reported the man was stable and due to be treated for suspected severe pelvic fracture and leg injuries.
The paramedics were joined by firemen and SAPS Search and Rescue officials who worked for about 11 hours to rescue him.
