Sports department gets creche children active

The Wentworth Crèche Forum has teamed up with the KZN Department of Sports and Recreation to help their children get more active.

IN its ongoing bid to produce a generation of keen-minded and confident children, the Wentworth Crèche Forum (WCF) has partnered with the KZN Department of Sport and Recreation.

Through the implementation of a learn and play programme, the department has provided all early childhood development centres (ECD) with sports equipment, including among others, balancing beams, balls, skipping ropes, boxing gloves, puzzles and hula hoops.

“The WCF thanks the department for these incredible gifts. Children learn through play and they have just made it so much easier to get our children to be more active, to play and to learn. It’s these resources which help us to implement effective ECD programmes,“ said WCF deputy chairman, Doreen Hamiel.

KZN Department of Sports and Recreation sports promotion officer, Dorcas Sambo added: “Young children need to participate in physical activity everyday where they live, learn, and play. In addition to physical health benefits, regular activity provides cognitive health benefits as well. Our understanding is that when children are physically active, they are better able to benefit from the stimulation they receive at the crèche – there is a record of better attendance and their behaviour improves. It is in this light that we have partnered with the Wash programme in Wentworth.”
