Karateka claims second in Zambia

Local black belt does his dojo proud.

BLUFF karateka Tyron Jonker did his dojo proud once again with a second place title in the Zone 6 Sub-Saharan Africa Championships in Zambia from 26 to 29 June.

Jonker, who is in grade 10, travelled to the championships as part of the Karate South Africa Protea squad and placed second for kumite among cadet boys aged 14 to 15 years, +70kg. He is a junior black belt with Funakoshi Karate South Africa and trains at the Bluff Kuma’s dojo.

Last year, Jonker competed in the Commonwealth Karate Championships in Canada where he came in third for kumite among cadet boys aged 14 to 15 years, +70kg. At only 15, he has already collected numerous titles and achievements and has been capped twice for the Proteas, since he started training at the age of six under his mother’s guidance.

“He has made us extremely proud to be capped for the second time for the Proteas at such a young age and for all his other achievements,” said his mother and sensei, Lee-Ann Jonker.

Jonker thanks all the sponsors, family, friends, Cedar Falls Spur and members of his dojo who helped him. “It has cost my parents a lot and I appreciate all the sacrifices they make so I can continue to compete.”
