Hijack spike leads to police alert

One vehicle was recovered in Umlazi.

THERE has been a spike in hijackings in the Montclair area, with three cars stolen in four days.

The first hijacking of the week took place at a supermarket in Kenyon Howden Road at about 5.50am on Tuesday, 8 July. A security guard who was conducting a patrol was stormed by four men, one of whom had a gun. He was commanded out of the car, and told to leave the key in the ignition. The men made off with the car and a firearm.

A day later, a man and his wife were attacked by four gun-wielding men at their Forestdene Road home at 6.45pm. As the couple opened the gate, the men reversed and jammed them in. They demanded keys and forced them out of their Toyota Fortuner. They sped off with the vehicle which had the couple’s bank cards, cellphones, clothing and groceries among other valuables. The vehicle was recovered in Umlazi’s B section.

The third reported hijacking took place in Montclair Road in the early hours on Friday, 11 July. A man who was dropping off his child at a creché was robbed of his vehicle by two armed men. While he was about to leave the creché, the men approached and commanded him to get out the car. They forced him to the ground and made off with bakkie which had personal items, including his marriage certificate, work keys and employee card.
