Motorists under threat at Higginson junction

Police arrest smash and grab suspect.

A MOTORIST who had stopped at the side of Higgison Highway’s N2 southbound on-ramp on Monday morning, 7 July, was set upon by two armed men.

The man, who was driving a meter taxi, stopped to urinate when two men, who waved a gun and a knife in his face, demanded his belongings. After emptying his pockets, the muggers headed to the vehicle and took his cellphone and other personal items valued at over R5,000.

Two days later, a woman was robbed of her handbag at the Higginson Highway N2 off-ramp at 6.50am. She was waiting at the robots for the light to turn green, when two men approached her vehicle. One of them smashed her window while the other snatched the handbag.

Two Montclair SAP officers, who were conducting patrols in the area saw the incident and chased after the men. They managed to catch one but the other evaded arrest and fled with the woman’s handbag.

He was arrested and appeared in court on Friday, 11 July, where bail was opposed. Montclair SAP officers are investigating further and are hopeful the assailant will be linked to other cases.
