Sunflower Fund’s new gardening campaign takes root

The Sunflower Fund is a non-profit organisation whose sole purpose is to educate and recruit a viable source of well-informed potential bone marrow stem cell donors who are ethnically diverse.

THE Sunflower Fund calls on all local gardeners to support the ‘share and save’ campaign which has been introduced by the South African Nursery Association (SANA).

The Sunflower Fund’s Allison Naidoo with Thando Tonga, Gugu Ngcobo, Zish Nobathu & Nomkhuselo Nqubuka from Plant Nursery. Customers can save up to 30% on selected items that bear the Sunflower stickers as well as the ‘share and save’ signage. All nurseries that are SANA members, including Plant Nursery on the Bluff, are hosting the promotion.

The Sunflower Fund is a non-profit organisation whose sole purpose is to educate and recruit a viable source of well-informed potential bone marrow stem cell donors who are ethnically diverse, in an effort to save the lives of those needing a transplant. The more donors on the registry, the more hope patients suffering with leukaemia and other life-threatening blood disorders have of finding their 1:100 000 donor match.

It is very unlikely that this life-saving donor match will be found outside a patient’s ethnic group, which means in South Africa 100,000 donors of each of the four prominent ethnic groups (black, coloured, Indian and white) need to be educated and recruited. Although it only takes two test tubes of blood to join the SA Bone Marrow Registry, it costs R2,000 to tissue type this blood sample before it can be included on the registry, which is why fundraising is essential in order to recruit donors.

The promotion runs from 1 May until 30 June.
