Wanted rapist shot dead in police chase

Police kill man in shoot-out.

A WANTED man was killed during a high speed chase and shoot-out with police in KwaMashu in the early hours of Monday, 9 June.

According to SAP KZN Media, while on patrol at about 2.25am, officers from the Flying Squad responded to a call for assistance from other police officers who were in pursuit of a vehicle with no registration plates.

The officers found the fleeing vehicle and joined the chase. The three occupants of the speeding car opened fire at their police pursuers who in turn fired back, causing the men to lose control of the car and collide into a house at the corner of Dakwakusutha and Ndlondlo roads.

In the ensuing gunfight on foot, one of the men (30) was killed, while his two associates escaped. Police uncovered an unlicensed 9mm pistol with its serial number removed next to the dead man and two magazines with ammunition in the vehicle.

The dead man was positively identified and is linked to cases of attempted murder and rape in Ntuzuma and house robbery in Newlands East.

“I am glad our police officers were able to defend themselves when they came under fire. I commend the officers for the manner in which they bravely took on these criminals,” said KZN provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.

KwaMashu SAP continues its investigations through evidence collected at the scene of the car crash.
