Montclair Hijackers’ joy ride ends in crash, arrest

A high speed race in Jacobs led to a crash and the arrest of four men for hijacking.

A JOY ride in Jacobs led to a crash and the arrest of four hijackers on Saturday, 31 May.

While on patrol, Wentworth SAP crime prevention members Constable Ntuthuko Cele and Warrant Officer McCormick responded to a report of a silver VW Scirocco and a maroon Range Rover Evoque speeding along Balfour Road in the direction of Phillip Frame in Jacobs.

At the scene they discovered the VW had crashed into a fence and the company’s Toyota Corolla at Tiger Brands’ premises. One of the men was still trapped inside the vehicle when the police arrived, but the rest had fled on foot. Cst Cele and W/O McCormick extricated the trapped man from the car and promptly arrested him.

Investigations revealed the VW was hijacked in Montclair and the owner of the vehicle was opening a case at Montclair SAP while the Wentworth officers were arresting one of the hijackers. The three remaining hijackers were found and arrested by Sergeant Nzama and Constable Nene.

The four men, all aged 21, were detained at Wentworth SAP and appeared in Durban Court on Monday, 2 June.

Both the VW and Range Rover were recovered and returned to their owners. Wentworth SAP station commander Colonel D Singh commends the officers involved for their swift response, recovery of vehicles and arrests.
