Unsecured cars at risk in Wentworth

Wentworth police urge motorists to safeguard their vehicle and themselves.

WENTWORTH police on patrol have noted a concerning trend of vehicle owners not safeguarding their cars and urge people to take action.

Patrollers in Merebank and Wentworth have noticed vehicles parked unattended, with open doors or windows. Vehicles parked on verges are easily targeted when owners are inside their properties. “It is wise to park inside the premises, where possible and lock up with alarms activated,” said Wentworth communications officer, Lieutenant Gumede.

“In the case of theft, report it to your local police, whether or not the vehicle is insured or fitted with a tracking system. There is a possibility your stolen vehicle could be found,” he said.

He urges to also refrain from sitting alone in stationary vehicles in dark or secluded areas, as they are easy targets for hijackers. Another tip he gives is to “Do your own survey of an area you intend to visit and ask about hotspots and other dangerous areas.”
