Domestic abuse on the rise in South Durban

Domestic abuse is on the rise in the Brighton Beach policing area.

DOMESTIC abuse is on the rise in South Durban and Brighton Beach SAP communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux warns that children are most at risk.

Brighton Beach SAP has noted an increase in the number of abuse cases reported, with children as the highest number of victims. “Both men and women can be victims and perpetrators of domestic violence. Cases reported show that children are more exposed to these incidents as they are present when domestic-related issues get out of control. Excessive alcohol consumption is also a contributing factor in some of the reported cases,” said Cpt Le Roux.

Victims of domestic violence can apply for an interim protection order, issued by the court. “The order is served on the perpetrator and until such time as the court appearance that person must adhere to the stipulations within the order. Should they contravene any stipulations, a criminal case can be registered with the interim protection order as an attached exhibit and an arrest can be made.”

Victim friendly facilities at police stations offer guidance, advice and trauma-debriefing for victims of domestic and other violent acts. “Often, in cases of family or domestic violence, victims are hesitant to open a case. If a police official is summonsed to attend such a complaint they must assess the situation and determine the level of threat to enable the victim to open a case, which can also include the removal of the perpetrator.
