Bluff police hunt down drugs, arrest 14

Police arrest 14 for drug possession over the Easter weekend and call for community participation to thwart drug dealers.

CHOCOLATE eggs were not the only things being hunted down over the Easter weekend, as Brighton Beach SAP arrested 14 people in possession of illegal substances and confiscated nearly 50 grams of drugs.

In an operation running from 18 to 21 April, members of the visible policing, crime prevention and operational support teams of Brighton Beach SAP conducted random searches at hotspots on the Bluff and in Clairwood. Fourteen people, aged from 16 to 50 were arrested and charged for being in possession of banned substances and 28 grams of heroin and 20,8 grams of dagga were seized.

“Drug distribution and possession is very difficult to police, especially when communities protect dealers. Substance dependency in terms of drug distribution has a social impact on communities. Once an individual has become drug dependent, they will steal from their own to sustain their habit,” said Brighton Beach SAP communications officer, Captain Louise Le Roux.

“It is concerning for police that the young are experimenting more and being used by their elders to become dealers. Generally young boys and girls are not suspected to be in possession of banned substances and dealers are aware that children under the age of 10 can’t be criminally prosecuted, making them easy targets.

We urge communities to work with their local police to reject drugs and report dealers. For drug rehabilitation assistance, call the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency on 031-303-2202. For anonymous reporting of drug use and distribution, call Impimpa on 086-221-1010, Crime Stop on 8600-10111 or Metro Police 031-361-0000. For matters realting to the use of children, call Childline on 0800-055-555 or 031-303-0904.”
