FOUR Wentworth police officers were arrested on Friday, 11 April on charges of corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

The anti-corruption unit of the KZN Hawks arrested two sergeants and two constables after investigations into their dealings with an unnamed man who they allegedly demanded a bribe from in January.

The officers found a man with an unlicensed firearm in Wentworth in January and allegedly demanded a R12,000 bribe from him to forgo the arrest and charges. The man paid the bribe and he was not arrested or charged for the illegal possession of the gun.

A case of corruption and defeating the ends of justice was opened at Wentworth police station by the man and further investigations were done by the Hawks anti-corruption unit. The officers appeared in the Wentworth Magistrate’s Court and were released on R1,000 bail each. They will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 17 April after further investigations are completed. No charges have been laid against the man who paid the bribe.
