Burglars’ trolley escape stunted by police

Police make arrest within 45 minutes when they find thieves pushing haul in trolley.

TWO housebreakers were arrested yesterday, 9 April when they were found pushing their loot in a trolley along Quality Street.

An observant neighbour alerted Brighton Beach SAP to a Bluff house-breaking yesterday morning. When W/O JJ Sonnekus from the Brighton Beach SAP crime prevention unit arrived on the scene with his team, the witness told them two men had stolen computer equipment from her neighbour’s home.

The officers immediately began a search of the surrounding areas and came across two men walking with a shopping trolley along Quality Street. They snuck up behind the men and W/O Sonnekus grabbed one to make the arrest. The second man tried to flee the scene, but only made it about 600-metres when police officers caught and arrested him.

When the owner of the house arrived home, the police were there with the two 24-year-old thieves and their plunder and he was able to identify the stolen items as his property. The men are to be charged with housebreaking and theft and are expected to make their first court appearance at the Durban Regional Court on Friday, 11.
Brighton Beach SAP management appreciate the vigilance of the witness who reported the crime and W/O Sonnekus and his team for their prompt response to the complaint.
