Woodlands drummie to raise her flag for SA

Drummie aspires to be a high court judge.

Woodlands teenager, Thuthuka Simelani (17) prepares to fly high as a member of the South African drum majorette team that will take part in an international competition in Croatia later on in the year.

The Durban Girls High School prefect started drummies when she was 10-years-old at Woodlands Primary School. The dazzling outfits are what first drew her to the sport which she now says is addictive. “I started drummies because it looked nice. It is now a part of my life. It’s addictive. My life doesn’t function without it,” said Thuthuka.

Her dedication to the sport first showed when she made the KZN team and grade 10, and has since been a permanent feature. She took part in the South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association (SAMCA) camp in December, where she achieved her South African colours.

“My mother was at the SAMCA prize-giving. When my name was called out to receive my colours, she started crying.”

From there she received an invitation to take part in a South African squad camp in January, for a shot for a place in the team. The 26 member team was published online in February. “When I was told I made the team, I did not believe it. It came as a surprise because it seemed the other girls were better than me. I am excited and happy about my selection. I am proud to have been chosen to represent my country.”

Her parents are proud of their daughter. Her father could not stop smiling when he found out she had been chosen.

A former member of the Durban Youth Council, Thuthuka aspires to be a member of the United Nations or a High Court judge.

Although training is underway for the competition, Thuthuka needs help to raise funds to take her to Croatia. She has approached businesses to assist her and she also plans to fundraise at school. Thuthuka appeals to the community to help raise approximately R30,000 for the trip. Donations can be made directly into SAMCA’s Standard Bank account number 355054302 with Thuthuka Simelani as the reference. Donations of any amount are welcome to help the budding star.
