Wentworth cottons on to clean up campaign

eThekwini Mayor, James Nxumalo believes the start of his city clean-up campaign has been a success and Wentworth residents have joined in the project.

ETHEKWINI mayor, James Nxumalo said the ‘Clean my City’ programme, launched on Friday, 7 March has seen enthusiastic participation from communities, including Wentworth.

With the support of councillors, numerous residents have answered his call of: “It’s your city, it starts with you,” by initiating clean-ups on beachfronts, Wentworth, Hillcrest, Ntuzuma, KwaMashu, KwaDabeka and the Hammarsdale taxi rank. Woolworths and the South African Post Office also joined the campaign.

“We encourage everyone to initiate clean-ups in their areas during the weekends. Charity begins at home, let’s continue to make strides and clean our city,” said city manager, Sibusiso Sithole. They hope all residents will become ambassadors of the programme.

Priority stakeholders for the first phase of the roll-out include informal trade areas, schools, public transport ranks, formal trade outlets, hotels, shopping malls and places of worship. Informal trader associations have been engaged along with the 42 participating schools in the DSW environmental outreach programme. Presentations are set to take place with formal traders and property developers through the Durban Chamber of Commerce in May and June.
