Police kill armed would-be robber

Police killed a man during a shoot-out in Umlazi.

AT about 8.30pm last night, 2 April, a man was killed and another fled the scene during a shoot-out with police in Umlazi.

While responding to a tip-off that an armed robbery was being planned, the Durban Flying Squad noticed two men matching the description of the would-be robbers in Umlazi C-section.

As the officers stopped to question the men, one immediately took off, firing shots at the police. The second man, who appeared to be co-operating, grabbed a hidden gun from his trousers and shot at the officer searching him. The policeman took cover and returned fire, killing the 32-year-old man.

A .38 Taurus revolver with five live rounds of ammunition was recovered. The second gunman is still at large.

“Police will not think twice in retaliating when their lives or the public’s lives are in danger and will do anything to decrease the proliferation of illegal firearms in the province,” said KZN provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
