No public holiday for voting day

THE Independent Electoral Commission announced this morning that the day of the general election, 7 May, will not be a public holiday.

The announcement follows consideration given by government to the effect of the economic downturn on the country’s economy, amid the potential impact of yet another public holiday.
Minister of Finance, Pravin Gordhan’s budget speech alluded to increased efforts by government aimed at increasing productivity so as to maximise and accelerate growth, create work opportunities and build a more equal society.
IEC chief electoral officer, Mosotho Moepya said in his statement this morning that in a bid to maximise the workforce’s productivity, polling stations would remain open until midnight on 7 May, to facilitate voters casting their votes outside of working hours.
