Food tunnels to bring an end to scholar’s hunger

Food gardens are provided to Wentworth residents to help support their community.

THE first of four food tunnels was erected at Collingwood Primary School in Wentworth, courtesy of Talisman Hire Durban South on Wednesday, 19 March, to allow local gardeners to provide food for themselves and the community.

Ernest Jonck, director of Talisman Hire Durban South was looking for a sustainable way to not only serve one person, but an entire community, so committed himself and his team to delivering four food tunnels within the next year in aid of the South Durban Basin (SDB) communities.

The base of operations at Collingwood Primary School will improve production of crops for the community who already have vegetable gardens on site and support feeding schemes in the area. Members of the Amanzimtoti Community Upliftment Program (Amcup), who build and erect these tunnels, taught the volunteers how to implement them and the community members how to plant, water, feed and maintain the tunnels.

Along with helpers from SDB Area Based Management (ABM) office, the Talisman crew, Amcup staff and local gardeners, the area was cleaned and levelled, 200 bags of soil and compost were filled and spinach and cabbage was planted.
