Wentworth police nab burglars in shoot-out

A house-breaking in Hillary ended in a shoot-out with police in Umlazi and the arrest of two men.

WENTWORTH police officers were part of a team that arrested two men after a high speed chase ended in a shoot-out in Umlazi on Tuesday, 11 March.

At about 11.30am, alert police officers noticed four men acting suspiciously in Hillary and called for back-up.

As Durban Tracking Team and Umlazi and Wentworth police officers moved in, the men tried to flee the area in a Mercedes-Benz, while shooting at the officers. Police returned fire as they pursued the men to Umlazi, where the Mercedes-Benz swerved off the road and into a wall.

Two men escaped the scene on foot and the remaining two, both 35-years-old, who had suffered minor injuries, were arrested. Police found jewellery, two plasma TVs and a kettle in their possession, which had been stolen in a house-breaking in Hillary. They were charged with attempted murder, house-breaking and possession of suspected stolen property.

Investigations revealed the Mercedes-Benz had been stolen in Berea last May. The men will appear in court soon.

“I am pleased these thugs have finally been brought to book. They do not belong in a civilised society and we hope the court will impose lengthy jail sentences on them so that they won’t be a threat to the public for a long time to come,” said KZN police provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
