Four armed robbers shot dead

AN armed robbery in South Coast Road led to a high speed chase and shoot-out involving an AK47, which left the four thieves dead last night, 27 February.

The men were allegedly robbing a business in South Coast Road when they were interrupted by Bellair SAP officers. The police called the Umlazi Canine Unit for back-up and a high speed chase ensued, as the men tried to flee. They opened fire on the police along Booth Road, shooting a bystander who was later rushed to hospital.

As the men attempted to escape via the N3, they collided with a barrier on Spine Road. Out of the vehicle, the men opened fire at the police again, who returned fire, killing all four thieves.

Two pistols, two revolvers and an AK47 were recovered at the scene and police suspect these men were involved in other robberies in Durban.
“Our police officers were very brave and the report I received is that their canine companions also played a major role in ensuring that our police officers were not killed. These thugs have no respect for the lives of others and it was obvious that they were prepared to kill our members,” said KZN provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
