Eight-week-old zebra foal dies at Crow

An eight-week-old baby zebra was rushed to the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow) in critical condition, after it collapsed under some bushes at Kenneth Stainbank Nature Reserve on Thursday, 20 February.

The foal was found by a ranger, after it was separated from its herd. He was in a delicate situation as he not only needed treatment for his injuries but also hand-rearing, as his mother was unable to produce enough milk to sustain him.

The Crow team worked throughout the night to ensure his survival, monitoring him around the clock as he was not completely out of the woods and suffered from a severe tick infestation. An appeal was made to the public for donations of SMA milk formula for the unnamed foal.

Even though the Crow team initially managed to revive the zebra, he succumbed to his condition on Monday morning, 24 February. Crow thanks everyone who assisted with donations and SMA milk formula.
