Clean-up nets cell thieves, stolen phones

Two men were arrested for theft during a clean-up operation underneath the Hulett's bridge on South Coast Road on Thursday, 20 February.

The operation was a follow-up to one conducted in October, as a result of an increase in crime taking place over the bridge and in the Clairwood CBD. Montclair SAP, Brighton Beach cluster police and security management’s land invasion unit demolished 12 shacks.

During the operation, a constable from the Brighton Beach Cluster Police recognised two men as those who had robbed two schoolgirls on the bridge the day before. Police officers were in pursuit of the men, but they evaded capture when they ran under the bridge.

The men were arrested and after questioning, led police to a shop where they had sold the cellphones. The shop owner co-operated with police, leading to the recovery of 32 more cellphones. Following a charge of robbery, the men appeared in the Wentworth Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 21 February.
