Teens collared for N2 smash and grab

Two 18-year-olds were arrested by Montclair SAP officers on smash and grab charges on Thursday, 6 February.

Montclair SAP’s communications officer, Lt Leopold Jojozi said: “A woman motorist was stationary at the robots on the N2 freeway’s Higginson Highway off-ramp when two young men approached her vehicle. One of them smashed the passenger side window and stole her handbag, which was lying on the seat. They fled on foot. The woman managed to flag down a police vehicle which was driving by and the officers gave chase.”

Police officers cuffed the duo in a nearby bush. It it believed they were headed towards Lamontville. They appeared in the Wentworth Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 10 February.

Lt Jojozi urges motorists to be aware of their surroundings at all times, especially when driving on Higginson Highway, which has become a hotspot for hijackings and smash and grab incidents. Drivers are warned to not leave valuable items in full view of passerbys as this allows for opportunistic crimes to take place.
