River’s torrid state is a ‘never-ending story’

A GROUP of trail walkers were met with a foul smell while on a guided walk on the bank of the Umhlatuzana River on Saturday, 25 January.

The walkers reported the water was green and dirty and plastic bottles were jammed into the rocks. “It saddens me to see all the filth that flows down the river. The day before our bi monthly walks I now walk down to the river to try and clear some of the plastic on the river, but it is a never-ending story,” said trail guide, Dave Joseph.

The municipality was questioned about the state of the river and if it was attributed to the planned maintenance of the Umhlatuzana Waste Water Treatment centre last year. The municipality said they were not aware of the issue and an investigation will be carried out. At the time of going to press, feedback on the investigation was not yet received.
