16-year-old DHS pupil brings home silver for SA

BLUFF resident and Durban High School grade 11 pupil, Jeandré Petersen achieved what most sportsmen only dream of when he competed in the U18 SA schools waterpolo tri- nations in Sydney December 2013.

The quirky 16-year-old and his team excelled, bringing home a silver medal, with Australia taking gold and New Zealand taking bronze. “It was an honour to represent my country,” he said. Jeandré was selected to play for the South African team through trials held in Johannesburg.
This was not his first international competition. He started playing waterpolo three years ago and has since competed for Kwazulu-Natal Aquatics at the Confederation Africaine De Natation Amateur (CANA) zone three and four swimming championships in Lusaka, Zambia in April 2013. He is a determined young man and has more goals to achieve. “I hope to soon play for the U17 side in the world champs,’’ he said.
He is a swimmer who also enjoys music and occasionally plays action cricket. However Jeandré’s focus is not only sports. He hopes to study accountancy after school and has an interest in art. He also describes himself as unusual, which defines why he is the only member of his family to play waterpolo. “No-one else plays waterpolo but they have supported me,” he said.
Jeandré was encouraged by a close friend to get involved in waterpolo and has loved it ever since.
