Woodlands teen swells Springbok Scouts’ ranks

The 58th Durban Air Scouts celebrate another Springbok Scout in Joshua van Staden (17), who received his award on Wednesday, 5 February.

The Woodlands teen completed his award with just a month left to spare, the deadline being his 18th birthday. He went for his final interview for the award on Sunday, 26 January. “Going into the interview I was confident because I knew I had met the high standards necessary for the Springbok award,” said Joshua.

“I am proud of myself for achieving the award – it’s a big accomplishment.”

Although he had a busy schedule, completing his matric and taking-on the rigours and demands of achieving the award, he also managed to achieve an 80% aggregate with three distinctions in his matric finals. He left on Friday, 7 February for Rhodes University to study towards a bachelor of science degree, majoring in software development. He takes with him his Scouting experience, which has left him well prepared to tackle varsity life.

With intentions on becoming instrumental within the Scouting fraternity, Joshua aims to achieve his Rover award and one day open his own Scout troop.
