Volunteer for street patrol

A CALL has gone out for volunteer ‘street COPs’ to patrol their own streets in partnership with the Bluff’s Community Orientated Policing (COP).

COP manager, Rake Jeeves believes the new street COPs initiative will help in the fight to reduce crime in the community. “We still have far too much crime and the only way to further reduce it is to have a system in place that makes it too difficult for criminals to operate here. That is why I decided to introduce street COPs.”

These are residents who patrol their own street. “You will be part of the COP family and be given a COP shirt and cap and will have direct contact with full COP members, Tactical and CCPU and receive the necessary training to perform the role. Your roll will be one of a deterrent nature to criminals scouting the area and you will not put yourself in danger whatsoever.”

Ideally street COP members will be retired people or people working from home said Jeeves. “All we ask is that they take a stroll along their street, checking on houses and looking out for suspicious people. If criminals scouting the area come to realise that there is a COP member in every street, they will definitely leave the area.”

Interested people may email Jeeves on rakejeeves@telkomsa.net or attend a meeting at the COP office, 350 Tara Road, on Wednesday, 29 January at 9am.
