Top matric lands coveted bursary

EX-CLAIRWOOD Secondary pupil Chuma Malunda exceeded all expectations when he matriculated with an aggregate of 90% and earned himself a full bursary.

The 18-year-old, who is originally from the Eastern Cape, was sent to be boarded in a home in Montclair by his grandparents and father after the death of his mother a few years ago. Since then, the shy teenager, who enjoys playing the piano and solving maths equations, has worked hard to achieve his best at school and earned the respect and admiration of his teachers. English teacher, Mrs A Dhoda said she was proud to have him in her class and knew he would succeed. “I helped him apply for the bursary from Sasol and I was not at all surprised when it was awarded to him,” said Dhoda.

Malunda passed all seven of his subjects with distinction and scored above 90% for five. “I expected to do well, but was surprised at just how well I did. I am excited about my future and look forward to moving to Cape Town next month, where I have been accepted to the University of Cape Town to study mechanical engineering.”

Also doing well at the school was Derisha Pillay, who scored five distinctions and two Bs.
