Rotarian’s lifetime of service rewarded

Rotary Club of Durban Clairwood Park hosted group 9370's annual district governors visit at the Pavilion Hotel on Saturday, 18 January.

ROTARY Club of Durban Clairwood Park hosted group 9370’s annual district governors visit at the Pavilion Hotel on Saturday, 18 January.

Forming group 9370 are the Rotary clubs of Durban Clairwood Park, Isipingo-Morningside, KwaMashu, eThekwini, Queensburgh and Merewent. Eight members members were inducted to the various clubs and the prestigious Paul Harris award for outstanding service was awarded to Nadasen Odayar of Merewent.

Odayar (91) served as treasurer of the Merebank Tamil School (MTSS) for 69 consecutive years. He has also served as a member and trustee of the Merebank Indian Association Charitable Trust. In his acceptance speech, Odayar humbly accepted the award and congratulated Rotarians for their sterling work and encouraged them to continue with their work.

The three inductees of the Rotary Club of Durban Clairwood Park were Cogi Naidoo, Marlene Naicker and Selvie Gounden which increases the club’s membership to 15, 12 of which are women. Former Rotary-Ann, Cogi Naidoo said: “I am excited to be inducted to the club. We will have the opportunity to be part of big projects, which will be challenging. I am looking forward to it.”

“We are excited at the prospect of welcoming our inductees. There are many projects which are already lined up for the year and we are looking to complete the installation of an edu-tainer at A Centre That Serves (Acts) in Amanzimtoti in April. This year, we will also focus on engaging the youth to continue Rotary,” said Rotary of Durban Clairwood Park president, Juggy Naidoo.

The main aim of the district governor’s visit was to address and evaluate the different clubs. District governor, Greg Cryer, said: “It is heartwarming to see the work the different clubs are doing. They volunteer their time selflessly to help. They are doing a fantastic job.”
