Ecstasty, uranium seized in sting op

TWO men in possession of 90 ecstasy tablets and one kilogram of suspected uranium were arrested on Thursday, 14 November on the Bluff.

Police intelligence officers received information that two foreigners were looking for buyers for narcotics and uranium. A sting operation was set up between the Durban Organised Crime Unit, Crime Intelligence and the Department of Minerals and Energy to investigate.

Detectives moved in and arrested the men, who are in their early 20s in Gray’s Inn Road. Investigations into their operations are ongoing, and they are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrates Court on charges of being in possession of drugs and uranium.

The suspected uranium has been handed over to the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA) for testing.

Provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the task team. “We are pleased our intelligence was able to uncover the deal before these items were sold on the black market.”
