Pup in pipe freed after four hours

COMMUNITY members united to save a pup that crawled into a pipe leading underground and got stuck on Saturday, 16 November.

At about 1.45pm, the alarmed pet owners called Tactical Security to assist when they realised their three-week-old puppy was trapped at their property in Munster Road.

Andrew Knibbs responded and his wife, Jolene Knibbs sent an alert to Craig Coldron of Bluff Alerts when she realised they needed help digging up the concrete. Community members quickly rallied, bringing angle grinders and getting to work to reach the terrified animal.

A local plumber lent his expertise in determining how the pipes would be situated underground and pipe pushers were sent down the pipe to locate the dog, which could be heard crying throughout the rescue mission.

As the alert was spread further via community chat groups, Daniel McLaughlin from Rescue Tech heard about the trapped pet. He arrived on scene with his crew to assist in the rescue effort, which had already been underway for about an hour. They got to work and after three hours of non-stop labour, he pulled the distraught puppy to safety and reunited her with her concerned mother.

“It felt absolutely brilliant to bring her out safely. It is a different feeling every time you know you have saved such a little life,” said McLaughlin.

“It was great to see how the community and other crime watch groups can stand together when the need arises for a rescue effort and also when help is needed. We all need to stand up together and fight against crime or to help rescue a puppy in a drain,” said Coldron.
