As part of Absa’s CSI project, the Malvern branch staff members volunteered their time at the school. They assisted in painting murals, volunteering at the school’s music and cultural show, teaching the pupils about savings and banking as well as raising R33,000. Based on the amount of hours they spent at the school, Absa converted and matched this in monetary forms, thus culminating in the R50,000 donation.
In his acceptance speech, school principal, Errol Peffer extended special thanks to Aruna Budhai and Reeona Chetty of the Malvern Absa branch. “We thoroughly appreciate the work you and your colleagues have done for the school. As a no-fee school we will always be indebted to you. You have really shown the spirit of a great heart,” said Peffer.
He also thanked his staff who supported and co-ordinated the sponsorship. Due to an influx of autistic pupils, a high care unit was developed. Through the sponsorship, the school will be able to build a playground in the unit.
