Subsistence gardeners to reap what they sow

A SUBSISTENCE garden in Clairwood started in September by the South Durban Basin (SDB) Area Based Management (ABM) office is proving fruitful for its committed workers.

Clairwood residents were invited by project co-ordinator, Anitha Govender, to join in the project and from the many who initially started farming the land, five dedicated women remain.

A small percentage of the crops grown will be given to them to feed their families, while the rest is sold to provide income for them. At present the women are developing all the plots together, but once they are fully-functional, they will each be given their own to maintain.

The municipality has provided all the necessary resources for the project, including seeds, tools and Jo Jo tanks.

“It has provided us with a sense of accomplishment and a livelihood we did not have before,” said Lungi Nene. She works the land every day, along with Lulekwa Flatela, Jabu Nzama, Buyiswa Sontsi and Phindi Kuzwayo, all of whom are eager to reap the rewards of their toil in a few months’ time.
